Rotarians David Ehrenkrantz and Carrie Martin took the lead on obtaining a Rotary SE PA District Grant of $3000 to help initiate a program for the reduction of malnutrition and disease in Uganda.

Agip Central Market in Soroti City East, Uganda

Ehrenkrantz was contacted by Rotarian Michael Anguria in Uganda about the toxic waste sites adjacent to the marketplace where people buy food and the crisis this has caused for the environment.  The issues threaten the health and food security of those living there.

Anguria’s organization, SAF-TESO, had developed a plan to address the issues facing the country such as hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and environmental sustainability. SAF-TESO is an Indigenous Non-Profit NGO registered in the Republic of Uganda since 2009, dedicated to improving the human rights, social and economic wellbeing, and health of Ugandans. Their strategies focus on strengthening collaboration, promoting creativity and innovation, research, and community building in the organization’s areas of operation. This way they can gain a strong voice in advocacy for ending AIDS, TB, malnutrition, food insecurity, food systems waste and loss, and the climate crisis in Uganda by 2030.

SAF-TESO had a plan for addressing many of these issues, but they needed the computers and technology necessary to implement the plan.  The project's goal is to strengthen the organization’s ability to design, implement, and scale effective communication and community engagement strategies through the use of digital tools (laptops and iPhones), in order to accelerate impactful and sustainable development outcomes..

Ehrenkrantz and Martin received a Rotary SE PA District grant of $3000 to support the purchase of the required technology.  Now SAF-TESO can use the technology to promote digital innovation and local solutions to environmental degradation, climate resilience, and livelihood development.

This is a great example of how a local club can have a global impact and use Rotary funds effectively to address problems which will improve the human condition and promote the vision of Rotary worldwide.  Thank you NE Philadelphia Cheltenham Rockledge Rotary Club for your initiative!
